This past Sunday, September 23, 2007, CBC owner John Glover reached the top of Washington's Mt. Rainier after a grueling climb that started at 1:00 AM and peaked at 11:00 AM. But it didn't end there. After an hour of celebration, John and his climbing team started the long decent, which didn't stop at the previous night's camp but went the whole way back down the mountain to the base camp. Not until 6PM did an exhausted John and his RMI guides and team complete the exhausting, but beautiful and gratifying, 17 hour round trip. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mount Rainier, at 14,410 feet, is the most extensively glaciated volcanic peak in the continental United States. Air is thin at these altitudes and there's not a deli or Starbucks in sight. Not even a Churpa guide to carry your pack. You eat and drink only what you can carry with you. There's no path to the top, just glacial ice, crevices that must be traversed, and snow covered moguls to climb and descend. Roped together with your three climbing partners, you must be ready in an instant to dig in your ice cleats and drive your climbing axe deep into the ice in case a team member loses his footing or falls into one of the ever changing crevices.
